Cast iron from the 1940s to 1950s Provenance: Private Collection Dimensions: H: 21; W: 58; D: 6 cm François Pompon is known for his animal sculptures characterized by a simplification of shapes and polished surfaces. Pompon made his debut at the 1879 Painting and Sculpture Salon and in 1880, works as an ornamentalist on the reconstruction site of the city hall of Paris. In 1890, François Pompon entered the workshop of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), where he worked as a practitioner at the marble depot, rue de l'Université. There, he manages the workshop from 1893 onwards, passing on the accounts, paying for the marbles and supervising the work. It is in 1905, that he takes the final decision to simplify the form of his sculptures. He polished the surfaces and removed the details. He sent the White Bear to the Salon d'automne of 1922 where his work contrasts with the aesthetics of realistic sculpture inherited from the 19th century. This work will earn him a late celebrity. Pompon's works were published by the Hebrew Foundry until 1922. Then Pompon follows his workshop manager Claude Valsuani to whom he entrusts his models when he takes over his father's foundry at the n°74 rue des Plantes in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.
