In 1939, the artist created his own visual language, which met with little commercial success in the early years of his artistic career. In 1975, the Belles-Lettres academic societies of Lausanne, Geneva and Neuchâtel awarded him the Belles-Lettres prize in Rolle, and in 1980 he was named Knight of the Order of the Icelandic Falcon.
