Né à Sint-Andries Bruges, Gilbert Swimberghe fut peintre, dessinateur, sculpteur, sérigraphe et créateur de mosaïques. Il étudia aux Académies de Bruges et de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. Il débuta dans un style expressionniste et évolua ensuite vers l’abstraction.
