He studied for three years at the École d'Artisans de l'Etat, where he learned freehand drawing, geometric drawing and painting under the tutelage of teachers such as Pierre Blanc, Ferdinand d'Huart and Antoine Hirsch. In 1909, he met one of his most loyal friends, Robert Stumper, with whom he maintained a strong bond throughout his life. Kutter created his first works in 1911, but found it difficult to reproduce the outside world faithfully. In 1912, Joseph Kutter went to Strasbourg to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. While there, he produced a work entitled La Petite France à Strasbourg, which demonstrates a greater mastery of drawing and color handling. In 1913, he moved to Munich to study decorative arts, and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1917. He married a Munich woman in 1918, creating a special bond with the city throughout his life. In the 1930s, Kutter produced a series of expressionist paintings of clowns, hailed for their originality and expressiveness. He also created many other important works over the course of his career, including landscape paintings of the Chiemsee in Germany, a place to which he traveled extensively and for which he was particularly fond. Kutter gained a strong reputation for his distinctive style and technical mastery. He was recognized as one of the greatest Luxembourg artists of the 20th century, and is one of the few Luxembourg artists to enjoy international recognition. He created an artistic circle with his former friends, the Sécession Luxembourgeoise. Joseph Kutter died in 1941, leaving behind a rich and varied body of work that testifies to his talent and commitment to art. Today, his works are held in numerous public and private collections, both in Luxembourg and abroad, and are appreciated for their beauty and sensitivity.
